It is interesting that Jefferson’s quote was an outright denunciation of the wage labor system upon which the entire economy of the Western world later came to be based. “Taking from the mouth of labor the bread it has earned” is essentially a warning of the dangers of wage labor enterprise. Jefferson is saying, somewhat in contrast to the views of Hamilton and Madison, that workers should own the results of their labor rather than being paid salaries or hourly wages for it. Of course, nowadays that idea is called socialism. In his day it was called democracy.
