Chief Dan George – Native American Sayings

May the stars carry your sadness away,
May the flowers fill your heart with beauty,
May hope forever wipe away your tears,
And, above all, may silence make you strong.
Chief Dan George

The beauty of the trees, the softness of the air,
the fragrance of the grass speaks to me.
The summit of the mountain, the thunder of the sky,
The rhythm of the sea, speaks to me.
The faintness of the stars, the freshness of the morning,
the dewdrop on the flower, speaks to me.
The strength of the fire, the taste of salmon, the trail of the sun,
and the life that never goes away, they speak to me
And my heart soars.
– Chief Dan George

When the white man came, we had the land and they had the bibles. Now they have the land and we have the bibles.
– Chief Dan George

Where no one intrudes, many can live in harmony.
– Chief Dan George

The time will soon be here when my grandchild will long for the cry of a loon, the flash of a salmon, the whisper of spruce needles, or the screech of an eagle.  But he will not make friends with any of these creatures and when his heart aches with longing he will curse me.  Have I done all to keep the air fresh?  Have I cared enough about the water?  Have I left the eagle to soar in freedom?  Have I done everything I could to earn my grandchild’s fondness?

  1. I do not agree with that. Silence cannot make you strong. You have to act. That’s my opinion.

  2. What about “the strong silent type” and “It’s only a fool who speaks his mind” also you cannot talk and listen at the same time. Show respect for your elders sayings for they have lived longer than you and have much knowledge to impart to the young, sometimes remaining silent is the wise option, when you speak your mind, the enemy knows exactly what to expect from you, whereas silence shall make him uncertain. Lots of young men have taken action in the past against overwhelming force and paid the ultimate price, even the strongest tree must bend and flex or the strong wind shall uproot it. That’s free advice!

  3. There must be a balance. A time to speak a time to be silent.

You cannot always be silent or it is a sign of weakness. You cannot always speak or you will look foolish.

  4. you keep the children in the inside the circle parents behind them and the elders on the outside to watch over us teach us

  5. Like all things, there must be balance as 1000 years says in his wisdom……listen to the songs of your heart….also “A time to talk, a time to listen, there is a reason, turn ,turn, turn.” Blessings all

  6. May the stars carry your sadness away,
May the flowers fill your heart with beauty,
May hope forever wipe away your tears,
And, above all, may silence make you strong.

i love this one more than anything i think is is true

  7. wisdom in humbility at all times..silence, one should fear in the pack, not the dog that is barking..but the one that is not.teachings on all levels all interconnected, all things and people have their place …just like in a ceremony you have a helper, door keeper, pipe carrier, Elder scapewos’…things are for reasons sometimes beyond understanding…for your place…

  8. “may the silence make you strong” I don’t think that this quote refers to “being silent” or “not talking”. I’d rather think that it’s a symbol for some spiritual force, maybe an inner knowledge that everything is fading and that the only thing you can rely on is nothingness. When you become able to realize this, it will give you strength.
